Too many gardeners have been burned already

On April 7th 2016, I ordered ~$425 worth of hostas from The Hosta Farm in Coeburn, VA.

As of this writing (July 11, 2016), I still have not received the plants or a refund in exchange. You can imagine my distress at having already been billed for the full $425 and having nothing to show for it more than three months later.

Reviews came too late for me-but they don’t have to for you
Had I first read the reviews for The Hosta Farm on yelp, I would never have ordered from them. As of this writing, there are 7 reviewers writing very recent reviews of the company-all giving one star reviews. Going back a little further, there is a comment thread on Houzz that chronicles at least 6 years of the company sending people the wrong plants and refusing to refund or replace when they do. In the words of one frustrated customer from both Yelp and Houzz, “The Hosta Farm in Coeburn is among the worst businesses I have ever had the misfortune to deal with.”

Phone calls and emails go unanswered
Initially, I received three email responses from the company assuring me that my products would be delivered. Since that time, I have emailed >20 times and called about 15 with no response to either. Either they never answer their phone, or they have a way of screening the calls of customers they don’t plan on fulfilling their obligations to.
Safety in Distance
In situations like this, a person could typically file in small claims court. Because the company does not have any physical office in my home state, nor would I be able to serve them papers in my state, there is no way for me to do so. It seems that the company relies on this difficulty in their “customers” recouping lost money when making their business decisions.
Why Create This Website?
I have written off any money or flowers I will ever see out of this order but if I can simply prevent this from happening to anyone else I have done my good deed for the week. I should also mention there are many very good nurseries to deal with on the web. I have ordered from three others, and got exactly what was ordered, arriving well packaged, and delivered in a very timely matter.
